A perm-led recruitment desk with an existing network can reach breakeven in three to six months because fees invoice on start date. A contract-led staffing agency typically takes nine to eighteen months, because gross profit arrives weekly in small increments while payroll is funded up front.

## Detail

The two models have completely different curves. Perm is lumpy and fast: one placement can cover a month of costs. Contract is smooth and slow: each contractor contributes a few hundred dollars of gross profit a week, so profitability is a function of how many bodies you can keep on assignment and how long they stay.

Three things push the date out. Hiring a second consultant before the first desk is self-funding. Discounting to win a marquee logo that then pays in sixty days. And underestimating the burden rate, which turns an apparently profitable desk into a loss-making one.

The signal to watch is gross profit per consultant per month against fully loaded cost per consultant. When that crosses, growth compounds; before it, every hire delays breakeven.
